Pediatric nursing is one of the distinctive types among the
various nursing jobs that distinguish the nursing profession from all
the other occupations. Pediatric nurses are mostly attached to emergency
departments, performing crucial tasks such as catheterizations for
collecting urine and stool samples, starting IVs, conducting basic eye
examinations, and obtaining the vital signs of temperature, heart rate,
blood pressure, and respiratory rate. They are also responsible for
administering intravenous, intramuscular medications and are involved in
a great deal of parent and patient counseling. Apart from this, the
other duties of a pediatric nurse include blood administering,
performing head to toe assessments and helping patients with broken
bones or splinting. It is obvious from the area and scope of the job
that a pediatric nurse performs a combination of multiple tasks, thus,
having a crucial role in treating all kinds of patients.
A
pediatric nurse requires some basic tools that are essential for
achieving success and expertise in the concerned field. It is very
important for a pediatric nurse to make the best use of the sensory
organs for better and effective assessments. Pediatric nurses often use
stethoscopes and sphygmomanometers for examining the various organs of
the body such as lungs, heart, and abdomen. They also measure blood
pressure. The other common tools used by the pediatrics department
include cardiopulmonary (CP) monitors for tracking heart and respiration
rates, Snellen charts for testing the patients' vision, and
thermometers for obtaining temperature.
Specialized training is
required for working as a pediatric nurse that can be acquired by taking
up internal training programs offered by the hospital where the nurse
is currently employed. Certified programs are also available after
graduation for candidates interested in specializing in pediatrics.
Various organizations offer special classes addressing Pediatrics. Some
of these courses include Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), through
the American Heart Association and Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course
through the Emergency Nurses Association. Individuals may also get
involved in various nursing societies of pediatric nurses.
